Our Classes
2023-2024 Offerings
Montessori Math - Elementary (age 6-12)
Join us in our home for math practice with authentic Montessori materials, learning through stories and concrete explorations. Each child will progress on their own journey to abstraction through individual and small group practice, practical application, and projects. Three-hour work cycle, one day a week; ten-week terms.
Fall Term - Operations
Using materials such as the Golden Beads, the Stamp Game, and bead frames, learners will develop skills in addition, multiplication, subtraction, and division. We will look at the history of numbers and our base-ten numeral system, the decimal system and place value, and static and dynamic multi-digit operations.
Winter Term - Fractions
Building on skills previously developed, learners will work with practice operations with fractions and begin to learn about decimals. Practical application and the use of fractions will come into play as we explore time, money, and cooking.
Spring Term - Geometry
Points, lines, planes, shapes, perimeter, area, volume and more. In this class, we’ll explore geometric patterns in nature, learn about sequencing and discover the importance of geometry in art, design and technology.
“This system in which a child is constantly moving objects with his hands and actively exercising his senses, also takes into account a child's special aptitude for mathematics. When they leave the material, the children very easily reach the point where they wish to write out the operation. They can thus carryout an abstract mental operation and acquire a kind of natural and spontaneous inclination for mental calculations.”
