“Do you have any paint we could use? We want to paint the seesaw.” Over the last few days, my older kids, along with some neighborhood friends, have been involved in a really big work. Second plane children decided to build a teeter totter, a seesaw, for their younger siblings. And for themselves. They measured, cut, hammered, and put together a wooden seesaw from pieces in our scrap yard. Then they wanted to paint it. We discussed paint options and settled on some old spray paint I had - they had to live with a colours I could provide, and they worked out among themselves where to use which color. They included the younger siblings in the construction and painting, navigated, disagreements and frustrations, all while flagging down customers on our street for the roadside stand (named The Lucky Clover 🍀), where they sell various goods they’ve made. Change is coming... We have spent the last week rearranging our main floor living spaces to better suit our current needs. After several months of observation and small adjustments, we decided a major overhaul was in order, redesigning two of our spaces. Our back room is now the TV/electronics/big toy/fort-building/play room/living room. Here in the front room we a re putting the Montessori materials, the muscial instruments, the art supplies, materials requiring either a lesson or supervision. It has a clear connection to the dining room; between those two spaces is where the bulk of our indoor homeschooling and lessons take place.
